Two Shows, The Rundown!
2/14/2009 12:28:00 AM

So Friday the 13th rolls around…what to do in Miami’s ever growing subculture paradise? Skip and hope your way to two brand new exhibitions that open on the same night on such a superstitious evening. No black cats folks but a nice dose of new works by Typoe at Spinello Gallery and goody treats at OH WOW with the group offering Confection. I was thinking of making each show one issue each, but I wanted to be true to the spirit of the night and what was offered in one mini gallery night hop. The usual gallery walk nights are the second Saturday of each month. Since this Saturday is the market driven holiday of Valentines Day I doubt many will make it out. Maybe Miami’s art world is just getting more rounded where you don’t have to wait for something like a “walk” to attend brand new shows. At any rate it was a nice mix and contrast.

Typoe is a Miami graffiti artist turned gallery artist. He has been known to use spray paint to express himself but has “Stepped his game up” with taking his vision and experience to the next level of development. The humble title to his first solo show “I Want Typoe So Effin Bad” is an interesting new direction for the artist and the gallery which shows his work, Spinello Gallery. Spinello Gallery use to be right in the center of the Wynwood Art District but has since moved to the ever growing Mimo District. This is a temporary space for Spinello as the galleries director Anthony Spinello is making his rounds to find it a new proper home. I must say though the new space (which is in an apartment building) is nicely put together and is a very creative layout for what the gallery shows. The young Spinello is very skilled in creating a high quality outlet for contemporary art. Very well done, bravo! For more info on the gallery and the artist visit www.SpinelloGallery.com

Confection is a brand new group show at one of my favorite new galleries
OH WOW (Our House West of Wynwood) This exhibition was organized and executed by Pres Rodriguez. Apart of the local artist community comes together in this one of a kind charity bake sale Art Exhibition. It was put together to benefit the Daily Bread Food Bank. Artists in the show were Jim Drain, Aranzazu Gayoso, Michael Genovese, Jason Hedges, Alvaro Ilizarbe, Susan Lee-Chun, Nick Lobo, Justin Long, Lee Materazzi, Hugo Montoya, Bert Rodriguez, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova, TM Sisters, Jen Stark, Jonathan Thomas and Kyle Trowbridge. It was a show you wouldn’t expect very often. Very original concept and if you love sweets this is for you. The show really felt like a social outing in a good way of course. The space is just so impressive that it is a joy to enter and connect with everyone and the art. Manny Prieres, artist and a true punk rock/hardcore head made a special custom Slayer cake that sold very quickly. Live performances and warehouse party started at 11:00 PM by Waterford Landing, Remote Controllers (DJ Healer and Chris Video) and Dino Felipe. Good times!
